My students often ask me the question, how to learn French online while having fun. I always tell them that learning a new language can seem challenging, but it can also be fun and entertaining.
During my classes, I often use various games, and I know it works, and my students love it ! Indeed, for French learners, games can be an excellent method to strengthen French skills while having fun. You can use games during your online French learning at any level.
Games to Learn French :
- Scrabble or Word Games:
Word games like Scrabble are perfect for expanding your vocabulary. By playing with friends or online, you are encouraged to create French words from random letters, pushing you to think quickly and explore new terms. Mobile apps like Words with Friends also offer virtual versions of these games to practice anywhere, anytime (you have no excuses not to practice your French).

Board games are a great way to practice French while spending time with friends or family. Popular games like Dixit, Les Aventuriers du Rail, or Time’s Up are available in French, offering a French immersion while having fun. Board games promote a natural exchange in French.

During my classes, I love using Quizlet or Kahoot (my students love it, and it allows for vocabulary review in a fun way).
- Role-playing and Theater Games
Organizing role-playing games or engaging in theatrical activities can be a playful way to learn French. By taking on the roles of different characters, you can practice oral expression, improve fluency, and boost your confidence when speaking French.
